Love and romance are abound in February as Valentine’s Day approaches, and many proposals happen around this time – so congratulations to all the new brides and grooms to be and happy planning!

As wedding caterers we know how important great food is to your special day so here are some food ideas from national food days from across the globe that occur in February and March and some ideas on how they can be incorporated into your wedding day.

As we are based in Devon and love fresh local produce we wholeheartedly agree with Brazil enjoying a national tomato day on February 1st. Tomatoes are an incredibly versatile fruit and if you are looking for something a little different at your wedding think about serving them ice cold as a gazpacho or as a spicy shot canapé! If you want a French vibe at your wedding February 2nd is Crepe day, a firm French favourite that can be served with a variety of fillings, with everything vintage being very on trend at the moment you could even add a touch of theatre to service at your wedding by including crepe suzette on your wedding menu!

Chocolate has long been associated with love and romance and is one of the most requested foods by brides and grooms for their big day. February 5th is Chocolate Fondue day, if you are looking for an interactive dessert for your wedding then having a great quality chocolate fondue on each table with a selection of fruits, cakes and sweets to dip into is a great and fun idea.

Add some heat and spice to your wedding day by incorporating the gorgeous chilli! February 26th is National Chilli Day and if you are considering adding a bit of heat to your wedding day menu then you are not alone. Many brides and grooms are choosing to incorporate spicy food on their wedding day be it a curry as the main course or a warming chilli con carne at the evening event. Some couples go all out, and theme their whole menu around the feisty chilli and include items like chilli vodkas, chilli sorbets or even chocolate and chilli brownies for their desserts! All good wedding caterers will be able to give you alternatives to your main course for those who have special diets, our advice is that if you are having something spicy or unusual for your main course pay extra attention to the alternative main to ensure you can keep all of your guests well fed and happy throughout your special day.

March also has some great food celebration days including March 25th which is National Waffle day in Sweden. Scandi style is having a big impact at the moment on both the food and fashion scene in the UK so as trendy brides choose to incorporate Nordic Glam into their special day, waffles served at weddings can’t be very far away. The beauty of waffles is that they can be served with anything and on anything, sweet or savoury and are suitable for starters, desserts, canapés or snacks.

Some of the nicest favours we have seen given at weddings are food inspired ones and what could be nicer that getting a pot of local honey from the Bride and Groom, March 17th is National Honey Day, so if you are having a March wedding – or even if your not – consider including this most natural of ingredients on your wedding day menu.

You wedding should be as special and unique as you are so choose food that you love, that inspires or means something to you, whatever you are planning for your wedding day menu we at Devon Catering www.devoncatering.com can work with you to make the perfect menu.
